Book Review

Book: "Jorney to the River Sea"

Author: Eva Ibbotsom

Number of pages:

Rating: 9/10

Summary: It is about a girl called Mia whose parents die and leave her a lot of money. She tries to find a relative to live with and finds out that she has an uncle wjo lives in the Amazon. She is very excited and decides to go live with him and his family. However when she gets there she is very disappointed because the family hate the outdoors and are very British. Then she begins her adventure and a lovely frindship forms before her eyes.

Front Cover: The front cover is brown and looks like a naturalist diary with three exotic butterflies on it.

My Thoughts: I thought that this book was brilliant but it lacked a bit of girlie fun. The character i liked best was Mia because she is lively, fun and she put up with all the horrid things that the Carter twins did to her. While i was reading this book i felt excited and nervous about what was going to happe to Mia. I would definitely reccomend this book to others because it is full of adventure and i felt really into the book after reading two chapters.

Book: "Molly Moon Stops the World"

Author: Georgia Byng

Number of pages:

Rating: 7/10

Summary: This book is about a girl called Molly Moon, an orphan with amazing powers. Molly is able to hypnotise people and stop time. All her life she has wanted to know who her real parents were, but with kidnappings, hypnotsing celebrities and murders, will she be able to focus on saving the world? With thrills, spills and just plain fun this is an excellent book to read!

Front Cover: The front cover is gold, with sparkly stars and a picture of a pug wearing a pearl necklace and star shaped sunglasses.

My thoughts: I thought that this book was very good because everything that happens is very unnexpected. While i was reading this novel i felt happy, nervous and sad about what was going to happen to Molly and her friends. My favourite theme in the book was family because even though all the children weren't a family, they still acted like one and still loved each other like one.

Book: "The Tale of Despereaux"

Author: Kate Dicamillo

Number of pages: 270

Rating: 8/10

Summary: The book is divided into four parts. Part one: "A Mouse is Born" in this part despereaux is born, he is very small with huge ears and no one in his family really wants him. They live in a castle and one day Despereaux hears the King playing music for his daughter Princess Pea. Despereaux is drawn to the music and starts talking to the King and the Princess. Mice are not supposed to talk to humans and as a punishment he is sent to the dungeons to be fed to the rats. Part two: "Chiaroscuro" in this part it is all about about a rat who lives in the dungeons but wants to see the light, so one day he sneaks upstairs only to find that rats aren't welcome and he accidently falls into the Queen's bowl of soup. The Queen dies and the King banned soup around the country. Part three: "Gor, the tale of Miggery Sow" in this part a girl called Miggery Sow is sold to a man who makes her work day and night, she really wants to be a princess and one day gets a lift with a solider to the castle, this is where she meets Chiarosuro and makes an evil deal with him. Part four: "Recalled into the light" this is the last part of the story where Despereaux saves the princess from the dungeons, and Miggery Sow is reunited with her farther.

The Front Cover: The front is cream with a little mouse running across it. The mouse has a piece of red string around him with a needle attached to it. The name of the book is written in red.

My Thoughts: I thought that this book was brilliant because you feel so many different emotions while reading it and it is an enjoyable book for all ages. My favourite theme in the book is love, because every single character showed some love even in the darkest of places. My favourite character is Miggery Sow because she was very funny and made me laugh out loud, but also very silly to have agreed to help Chiaroscuro with is evil plan.

Title: Airhead

Author: Mag Cabot

Rating: 9/10

Summary: Airhead is about a girl called Emerson Watts (Em to her friends) a total tomboy who couldn't care less about the latest style or who's no.1 in the charts. She has one best friend Christopher and all they do is play computer games and watch surgery shows. But that all changed when she was invovled in a freak accident, a plasma screen fell and hit her flat out at the Stark Megastore grand opening! Just at that moment Nikki Howard super model extroadinare collapsed in the same building. It all gets a bit confusing here as when Em wakes up she's in a hospital bed and feels so tired and can't move a muscle. She starts realising things like her fingernails are different her hair is blonde and her voice is really girlie. During the night strange people visit her and tell them that they are her friends, all famous people, all Nikki Howard's friends! It soon becomes clear she has had a brain transplant into Nikki Howard's body. Her life completely chages from that moment on and she has to live the life of Nikki Howard while keeping up the highschool life of brainy Emerson Watts. Between fashion shoots and homework she's finding it hard to get the time to breath, she misses her family and her friend Christopher as she scan't go and visit them because that's not what Nikki would have done. She eases into things and starts enjoying her new life as a teen sensation with tonnes of cash!

Favourite character: my favourite character was Lulu her friend that she lives with because she thinks shes had a spirit transfer that the scientoligists did! She's a really good friend when Nikki/Em didn't have any friends.

My thoughts on the book: I thought that this was a really good book and funny aswell. It's a bit confusing because it's a girls a brain in another girls body and nobody knows about it! It brings you into another world aswell but it's still realistic and there's nothing made up. It makes you laugh out loud and forget about your average normal life when your reading it because nothing like would ever happen to anyone that you would know.

Mian Themes: Friendship, Love, Family and School.

Tongue outThere's also a sequal to this book coming soon called "Being Nikki". I'll bring in "Airhead" and i'll look out for the sequal in the shops!Tongue out

Romeo & Juliet

Author: William Shakespeare

Rating:8/10 I gave this story eight out of ten because I didn't like the ending but I really enjoyed reading it and I thought that it was very good.

Summary: Romeo & Juliet is about two children of two families that hate each other who fall in love. The story is set in Verona, Italy with the Capulet and the Montague family who fight all the time. Prince Esculus is getting sick of them fighting and says that if they ever disturb the peace again their lives will pay the price. Romeo a Montague has unrequited love for a girl named Rosaline who is a Capulet he says that she is so beautiful and tries to buy her love but she doesn't love him back and Romeo is a very sad boy. County Paris wants to marry Juliet a Capulet and he goes to her father to see if he can. Lord Capulet says that he wants Juliet to wait two more years until she marries because she's only thirteen and invites Paris to a Party he's holding that night to examine "other beauties". Romeo and his friends Benvolio and Mercutio decide to go to the Capulet party because Roaline will be there and Benvolio and Mercutio want to try and pursuade him that there are other girls even more beautiful than Rosaline. When they get to the party Romeo sees Juliet and thinks that she is the most beautiful thing in the whole wide world and forgets about Rosaline, when he goes to talk to her they speak in poetry and fall instantly in love. After the party they realise that they are supposed to be enimes but Romeo goes to Juliet's balcony and they decide to get married in secret. Friar Lawrence thinks that it's a good idea because it might stop the fued and Romeo and Juliet are married, the only people who know about it are Friar Lwarence and Nurse Juliet's minder. Also at the party Tybalt Juliet's cousin sees Romeo and is very angry to see him at the party, Lord Capulet tells him to calm down and forget about it but Tybalt vows revenge. Out in the street one day Tybalt is looking for Romeo and finds his friends Benvolio and Mercutio, when Romeo comes he doesn't want to fight Tybalt because they are related, Mercutio is disguted and fights Tybalt. Mercutio is killed and blames Romeo for it Romeo is so angry that when Tybalt returns they fight and Romeo kills Tybalt, realising ehat he has done he flees for the safety of Friar Lawrence's cell. When the Prince hears that Tybalt and Mercutio are dead he banishes Romeo from Verona. When Romeo hears that he is banished he is distrought and tries to stab himself the friar stops him and tell shim to go to Mantua fro a while but before he goes Nurse tells him to go to Juliet and spend the night with her. When they wake up Paris is in the Capulet house and is talking about marrying Juliet, Lord Capulet is very eager this time for Juliet to marry Paris and names the day for that Thursday. Of course Juliet is distrougt to hear of this because she is already married to Romeo, she tells her father that she will not marry Paris but she hasn't got a choice this time because if she doesn't Lord Capulet will disown her. She asks Nurse for help but Nurse tells her that she should forget about Romeo and marry Paris because he's far better looking then Romeo, Juliet is all alone and so seeks help from the Friar. When she gets to Friar Lawrence's cell she asks him for help and if he can't help her she will kill herself. Friar Lawrence makes a plan that he will give her a potion that will put her into a coma for forty two hours, she will take it the night before her wedding and when her family go to wake her up they will think that she has died and will bury her. Friar Lawrence will then write a letter to Romeo yelling him the plan and when Juliet wakes up her and Romeo can go and live in Mantua, Juliet trusts that Friar and leaves him with the potion in her hand. When she returns home she changes her mind and tricks her father into believing that she does want to marry Paris, Lord Capulet is so delighted he moves the wedding up to Wednesday. This sort of ruins their plan and Juliet starts to get worried and scared about taking the potion she starts thinking about getting trapped in the tomb with the bones of her ancestors and what if the friar is trying to cover up his mistake of marrying Juliet to Romeo in the end she doesn't have a choice and takes the potion, she also lays a dagger beside her incase she wakes up and the potion didn't work. When Nurse goes to wake her up she realises that she is in the same clothes as yesterday and her breathing isn't normal, she then figures out that she is dead. She is so upset and calls for help, when Lord Capulet and Lady Capulet enter the room the Nurse is in tears and she tells them that Juliet is dead. When Friar Lawrence comes in with Paris he has to act really sad but he knows that Juliet isn't actually dead. Towards the end of the play we begin to realise that Paris actuallt did love Juliet and he is really upset that they never got to get married. Balthazar one of Romeo's friends coems to visit Romeo and tells him that Juliet is dead, Friar Lawrence was supposed to send a letter to Romeo explaining the plan but it didn't reach him in time and Romeo goes to the apothecary to get posion that will kill him. He tells Balthazar to get him some horses and he says he's going to go to juliet's tomb and kill himself so that he can be with her in heaven. That night Paris also goes to the tomb to lay flowers there when Romeo paris hides and sees him opening the tomb he gets very angry and starts to fight with Romeo. Not knowing who the person is Romeo kills him and suddenly realises that he has killed County Paris and lays him beside Juliet. Paris's page sees the fight and goes to get the Prince .When Romeo sees Juliet her lips still look warm and she lights up the whole room Romeo drinkd the potion and dies across Juliet. Just then Friar Lawrence comes to open Juliet's tomb but sees blood all over the floor he then sees Paris's body and Romeo's body on the floor. Juliet then awakens and is in shock when she sees the bodies around her Friar Lawrence can hear people coming and tells her to hurry up and he will hide her in a convent but Juliet can't go and takes Romeo's dagger and kills herself. Friar Lawrence hurries off to safety. Soon the whole town is at the tomb including the two families the Prince says that there is no punishment for anyone because everyone has lost someone. The Capulet's have lost Juliet and Tybalt the Montague's have lost Romeo and Lady Montague and the Prince has lost Mercutio and Paris. When Friar Lawrence explains what happened they beleive him because he's a holy man. The Prince also reads a letter that Romeo gave to Balthazar to give to his father it explains everything aswell. The Capulet's and the Montague's finally make up and will try to keep the peace.

I didn't have a favourite character in this book but I admire Juliet for being so brave and strong because she was really scared about taking the potion and being trapped in the tomb but she took the potion anyway because she loved Romeo. I really liked the last two lines "For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo" because it shows how much more Juliet sacraficed to be with Romeo. My favourite quote that Romeo said was when he first sees Juliet "so shows a snowy dove trooping with crows" it shows that he thinks that she is so beautiful compared to all the other girls that he has ever seen. In the last scene when the two families are making up Capulet says "O brother Montague, give me thy hand. This is my daughter's jointure, for no more can I demand." Lord Montague then replies "But I can give thee more, for I will raise her statue in pure gold" this shows that even though they are making up they are still trying to out do the other so the fued will never be over completely. I also think that Friar Lawrence is a lot to blame for Romeo and Juliet's death because he married them and he made up the plan for Juliet but he thinks that it is all fate and that the stars just didn't agree with them and the whole story all has something to do with the stars and fate. The main theme in this story is love. Romeo thinks he loves Rosaline but then he falls in love with Juliet. Paris also loves Juliet. Capulet loves his daughter and Lady Montague dies of grief beacause her son was banished which showed she loved Romeo a lot. Nurse also treats Juliet and loves Juliet as her daughter and nursed her since she was a baby. Love plays an important role in Romeo and Juliet.
