Book Review!!! - No Goodbye

The name of the book is "No Goodbye" and is written by Marita Conlon-McKenna.

"No Goodbye" is about a family that falls apart when the mother takes off. She leaves them a letter stating that she felt she had no part in her marriage. She rings them occasionally and tells them that she is staying with her sister in London. The story itself is situated in Ireland, near Dublin.Lucy,at the age of twelve, is left doing all the housework and has to look after her little sister Grace, and do the cooking.Grace is bewildered and keeps asking where her mummy is and when she is coming home. She doesn't understand and won't be good for her dad. Dad is depressed and comes in late. He sits in the kitchen or sitting room watching telly or reading the newspaper. He often gives out to Greg for not pulling his weight and leaving all the work to Lucy. Greg is the eldest and loves rugby, he wants to play on the A team. He hates having to look after his brother and sisters. Connor is ten and is quite troublesome. He has learning difficulties that his mum used to help him with. He feels that the others don't care about him and is constantly in fights with other at school. Connor, fed up with being ignored and hated by his family and friends, runs away. He doesn't know where to go and finds himself at the port where ferries are going to Holly Head. He decides to find his mother. He brought no money apart from his postal order and a few euros he spent on food so spends the night asleep in a boat until he can withdraw money from his postal order the next morning. However the nightswatchman discovers him and Connor agrees to let him ring his dad. Grace and Connor come down with the chicken pox and the children's granny is forced to intervene. Then Greg is knocked on concious while trying out for the A team in rugby. Dad is overwhelmed and his sales are down and he mightn't get the yearly bonus he gets every year. He has to travel down to Kerry to sell some vetinary medicine and takes the kids along. The children don't want to go in case their mother comes back.Connor, still sore about her leaving, suggests that they leave a letter on the kitchen table as she did to them. Everyone laughs at this and they wrote a letter saying they were going away, but they didn't say where. Lucy, Greg and Grace left little clues. Grace painted a picture of a dolphin, supposedly Funghi, Lucy accidentally on purpose left her diary open on her bed and Greg left a map with Dingle circled on his bedside table. And so they set off. When they arrived in Dingle they were amazed by its beauty, townkids as they wee the children were greatly fascinated by the sea and the fields. On their last day there, they took one last stroll on the beach and paddle in the sea. Grace was convinced she saw a dolphin and Lucy had to grab her as she tried to swim out to it. Greg and Lucy wouldn't beleive her, but Connor thought he had seen it too. Suddenly a faint voice yelled their names. The children swung round and there a short distance away, with her arms outstretched was their mother. They ran like rockets towards her and embodied her in a big hug. Their family was complete again.

My favourite character was Grace because she was so cute. She didn't have a clue what was going on and I felt sorry for her.

CryThe saddest part was when the children came home from school, their mother was missing and their father was sitting in the kitchen reading a letter she had left for them.

LaughingThe happiest part was when the family was reunited again.

Each chapter in the book was narrated by a different character so you could understand all their thoughts and feelings. I would definately recommend this book because it was interesting

I wold give this book a 10/10!!!

Romeo and Juliet!!!!!!

The play "Romeo and Juliet,"  is about two lovers, Romeo and Juliet. The problem is the two are from feuding families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Juliet is a Capulet and Romeo is a Montague. At the beginning of the play,Romeo is in love with a girl called Rosaline. He is suffering from  unrequited love,   which means that Rosaline does not feel the same about Romeo. He is always moping about and going for long walks early in the morning, before shutting himself in his room for the day. Some Capulet servants start off the play, bringing us into a fighting mood. Sampson bites his thumb at servants from the Montague household, which is like sticking up "the finger" in the modern day world, starting a streetfight that draws a large crowd. It is here that we meet the cousins' of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo's cousin, peacemaker, Benvolio and Juliet's cousin, the fiery Tybalt. Next on the scene, we meet the parents. Lord and Lady Capulet, and Lord and Lady Montague. The fight then draws Prince Escalus to our attention, who threatens death to the next member of the feuding families who starts a fight. The play goes on a bit like this until we arrive to the scene of a Capulet's party. Outside are Romeo, Benvolio and their friend Mercutio, dressed in disguise as party-goers.They have found out that Rosaline is there and are planning on gate-crashing the party. The three sneak in and all is going well until Tybalt recognises Romeo's voice. However, Capulet is in a party mood and tells Tybalt to forget him and enjoy the party. Tybalt vows to get revenge before leaving the party in a huff. It is now that Romeo sees Juliet and thinks that she is the most beautiful creature he has ever set eyes on. He says "Oh she doth teach the torches to burn bright, it seems she hangs upon the cheek of night as a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear." Romeo then makes his way over to Juliet and they dance. They talk to each other in the form of a sonnet, using relegious imagery to show that they worship each other. It is only later that they find out they are members of the opposing feuding family.Ruled by fate, the two fall uncontrollably in love. Romeo visits Juliet at her balcony after the party. They declare their love for each other and agree to be married. Friar Laurence marries the two and only him, the two lovers, and Juliet's nurse know.It is only one hour after his marriage to Juliet, that Romeo bumps into Tybalt who ccallenges him to a duel. Romeo, now related to Tybalt won't fight him and Mercutio fights instead. Romeo tries to stop them knowing that Prince Escalus, true to his word, will execute the two for fighting. He comes between the two fighters but Tybalt sneaks his sword under Romeo's arm stabbing Mercutio that leads to his death. Tybalt goes off. Mercutio dies, blaming Romeo for his death and cursing both the houses. Tybalt comes back and Romeo believes that Mercutio wants him to kill Tybalt. They fight, Tybalt falls and Romeo kills him. Benvolio orders him to run before Prince Escalus arrives. Benvolio explains to the Prince what happened and Romeo is banished.

Romeo hides in Friar Laurence's cell, unaware that he is exiled. Juliet finds out that Romeo killed her cousin and is exiled and begins to think the wedding was a bad idea. The nurse agrees Romeo is to blame which brings Juliet back to her senses, that she must defend her husband no matter what. Romeo finds out his punishment and tries to kill himself. He spends his wedding night secretly in Juliet's bedroom, before sneaking off to Mantua, a nearby town. Capulet arranges Juliet to be married to the County Paris. Juliet refuses, and is threatened to be thrown out of the house. She goes to the Friar for help who hatches a plan. Juliet is to take a potion that will put her in a coma for forty-two hours, making her appear dead. The Friar will send a letter to Mantua,to Romeo with Friar John.Romeo and Friar Laurence will then break into the tomb when Juliet is due to wake up and whisk her off to Mantua to live with Romeo. However, the wedding is brought forward a day, upsetting the balance of the plan. Then Friar is held up and can't deliver the letter. The worst thing is Romeo's friend/servant, Balthasar, unaware of the whole plan makes haste to tell Romeo of Juliet's "death." Romeo is devastated and without stopping to think, buys poison and heads to the tomb where Juliet is sleeping. Here he meets Paris, goin to pay his respects to Juliet.Romeo is forced to kill him and lays Paris next to Juliet. He takes the poison. Friar Laurence rushes to the tomb to free Juliet seconds after Romeo drank the poison, and is met by a gruesome scene. Dead Romeo lying on Juliet. Dead Paris on the other side of Juliet. Paris' blood all over the floor, and the swords lying thrown in the blood. Juliet wakes to find an astonishing sight before her.Friar Laurence urges her to get up and come with him, but Juliet refuses. The Friar runs away without her. Juliet takes Romeo's dagger from his belt and stabs herself with it. The Watch arrive and catch Friar Laurence and Balthasar fleeing the area.Prince Escalus arrives with Lord and Lady Capulet and Lord Montague who explains his wife has died. Friar Laurence explains everything including the marriage. Balthasar har a similar account and announces that Romeo has a letter in his pocket. The two families finally end the feud to the loss of their only children.

SmileMy favourite character was Juliet because she was very strong throughout the play even when the people she was closest to abandoned her in her time of need. She proved to be stronger than Romeo and the more realistic lover.

FrownMy least favourite character was Tybalt because he was always jumping into things and stirring things up and was the reason that Romeo was exiled which took away the happy ending there may have been.

LaughingMy favourite part of the play was when the two lovers were together and everything was going according to plan.

CryMy least favourite part was when the two lovers died because it was very sad and tragic.

I really enjoyed"Romeo and Juliet" and couldn't resist the urge to have a sneak peek at what would happen next!!!Wink

Steamboat Charlie - Half Moon Ranch!!!

Steamboat Charlie is a book in a series called Half Moon Ranch. Written by Jenny Oldfield, Steamboat Charlie is about a horse called by that name. He is jet black with a dazzling white star on his forehead. Brad Martin, Sandy Scott's boyfriend, buys the horse off Don Smith, an elderly man who owns a neighbouring ranch, "The Flying U".The problem is, Don doesn't legally own the horse. He belongs to Don's son - in - law,Truman, who dumped the horse with him when he was put in jail. There are a few things Don may have left out at the time of sale. Like the fact that Charlie is an exceptional Houndini horse, and can pick just about any bolt and latch that dares try to keep him in. Sandy, her son Matt, daughter Kirstie, and their ranch hands Hadley,Karina and Ben have their work cut out for them trying to teach this guy some stable manners!Meanwhile Truman has broken out of jail and is demanding for his horse back. Don's daughter Rochelle is terrified when she realises that her dad sold  her, and her husband's horse. She tries to protect her dad by inventing a tale about horsethieves who stole Steamboat Charlie, but Truman doesn't buy it.Rochelle also tries to destroy the evidence, that being the horse, by trying to shoot him but she misses both times. After an ancient fallout with Rochelle from years ago, Don decides to show his love for her by shooting Charlie himself, and takes off in search of the animal.. Eventually, so terrified of a furious Truman, she admits that the horse was sold to Half Moon Ranch.Truman shoots off to reclaim what is rightfully his using violence or whatever else may be needed. Sandy's daughter Kirstie is aware of what is happening and the fact that Charlie has once again escaped to the beautiful mountainside that is her back garden, is not  helping matters, now that there are two madmen out looking for the horse, one armed with a gun! Kirstie knows that Charlie's life is in danger, and sets off in pursuit of the horse, who is blissfully unaware that he is in grave danger. The race is on, but the question is, who will win the race? What will happen to Steamboat Charlie?...

I really loved this book. It was great fun to read and really got my heart pumping with all the action!I found myself being sucked in, unable to get out until I finished the book. The main characters are Kirstie, her friend Lisa, Sandy, Matt, Hadley, Don, Rochelle, Truman and of course, Steamboat Charlie. There were a few sad parts, like when Truman threathened and hit Rochelle in the diner, and when Charlie, Lisa and Kirstie were shot at,Crybut altogether it's a really good book and I'm already half-way through the next book in the series called Skylark. Hopefully you all enjoyed my thoughts on this book and Happy Reading to you all!LaughingSmile

Reflection!!!!!!

Over the past year we have been doing our reviews on the internet.I thought this was a cool idea.Cool I liked this idea because  it was easy to see other reviews, you could see your mistakes clearly and you could comment on other reviews. I liked having a blog because I could design it whatever way I wished, I could choose a name for my blog and could change it at anytime.I loved being able to see other reviews because when we wrote out the reviews we could only hear a few of them.I 'd love to do a blog again next year because I don't want to have to write it all out again, and my hand hurts when I have to keep writing everything out and I usually end up losing the sheets. The only bad thing I can think of is that I have to go to a computer to type them out.

Review on 'Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry'

'Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry' is written by Mildred D. Taylor. We read this book together as a class. The book is the first of a triology, and is narrated by Cassie.

'Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry' is about the battle between 'white' people and 'black' people.'Black' people were blamed for everything while 'white' people could walk around freely. There was seperate schools and I bet you I can name a whole load of other unfair differences that I uncovered in this book, but this book is more than that. This book shows one family's determination not to be beaten.

The Logan family were one of few that owned their own land.On it they grew cotton. The Logan children attended Great Faith Elementary and Secondary School. The oldest was Stacey. Nearing fourteen, he considered himself the man of the house while Papa was away.He was calm and collected, strong and tolerant, yet protective of his younger siblings. Cassie, the narrator of the story, was nine years old. She was head-strong and tempermental and loved to get her own way, yet she was sensitive inside.Christopher-John was the second youngest in the family, he was short and stout but had a heart of gold. The youngest of the Logan family was Clayton-Chester. Though he was usually called Little Man. He was neat and tidy yet revengeful of anyone who done him wrong. The adults of the Logan family were Papa and Mama Logan, Big Ma and Uncle Hammer.

The children think life is normal and happy in their childhood world.Stacey's friend T.J thinks something different. He tells them about Night Men and Berry's Burning, but Cassie is only awakened to the real life after an incident in Strawberry at the Barnett's Mercantile, and an encounter with her unfriendly neighbour Miz Lillian-Jean.All is not so hunky dory in the adult world as it seems.

T.J however is less than pleased, he failed to graduate to the next grade in school and cheats in order to pass. In the end he gets Mrs. Logan fired of her teaching job by complaining up at the Wallace Store. Money is short in the Logan household and Papa returns to his job on the railroad. T.J is still not happy, and in a desperate attempt for attention he befriends R.W and Melvin Simms, two 'white' brothers. They get T.J in trouble, and after beating him up, almost get him hanged. Papa Logan takes a risk and loses a quarter of his cotton by setting it on fire in order to save T.J's life. T.J ends up on the chain gang and Cassie realises that this is life but that someday, maybe, it might all change...

The main characters are Stacey,Cassie,Christopher-John, Little Man, Mama, Papa, Big Ma, Mr. Morrison,Uncle Hammer and T.J. My favourite character was Cassie. SmileShe doesn't always think things through and tends to speak her mind, but she's brave and outspoken and I salute her for it. My least favourite character is definately T.J. He totally disgusts me the way he can ly and cheat out of almost everything.FrownThe happiest part is when the children rush to meet their daddy coming home. The saddest part is when T.J is put on the chain gang.Even though I hate the guy I still found it very sudden and hard to digest at first. I really want to know what happens next and I'm dying to read the next two in the series. It's actually really, really annoying me now!! YellAh well, happy reading, I'll keep you updated with more reviews.
